Pastor Kory's Update

Dear West Covina Christian Church Family,

I’ve been reading a book called Kingdom Come over the last couple of weeks.  In the book, the author makes the observation the word “church” is only used by Jesus three times in all of His recorded words in the Bible. Can you think of those three times?  It’s really two times because one verse uses the word twice.  If anyone can think of the two verses, email me (kwenell@westcovinacc.org) the references and your favorite snack and I’ll leave you a treat for you on your doorstep.  (No Google to find the answer!)

Anyways, Jesus doesn’t refer to the church nearly as much as He talks about the Kingdom of God or the Kingdom of the Heavens.  Jesus’ Kingdom has to do with giving people abundant life (John 10:10).  This is why Jesus’ teaching is so practical—about things like forgiving others, not worrying, and how to pray for those who have wronged you.  But Jesus’ Kingdom is more than just teaching.  Abundant life includes the quality of our relationships and our health and people being treated fairly.  This is why Jesus not only taught amazing lessons, but He also healed people and confronted injustices.

That’s a lot of information, but the reason that I bring it up is because it is very relevant to us right.  The church is important, but the church is not just where we meet on Sundays.  The church is one of the ways God advances His Kingdom.  Ultimately, the church is the people of God doing the work of God.  So, while we can’t meet together on Sunday in our church building, this does not stop us from being the church.  We can still minister to our neighbors, pray for those who are hurting, love and care, forgive and give grace, and offer a helping hand when we see a need.

This week’s Video Devotional is given to us by Chuck Weiskircher:

A few announcements to be aware of:

  • We will continue to have Online Worship Service until further notice.  Please join us at 10:30 on Sunday morning (www.westcovina.church).

  • Virtual Prayer Meeting on Friday, May 1 at 7:00pm.  This will be a time for us to share prayer requests and pray for one, our church, our community, and our country.

  • Online Fellowship Gathering on Sunday, May 10 at 12:00.  This past week’s Online Fellowship Gathering was a huge success and a lot of fun.  We will have a similar one in a couple of weeks.

Thank you all for your continued support and prayers.  I am praying for you.  Please let me know if there is anything specific I can pray for you about or if you have any other needs.

With love,
Pastor Kory
