The Supremacy of Christ

Professor Cassie Holmes says, "Seeing the same thing, doing the same thing, or being with the same person again and again lowers its impact on our emotional experience. Put simply, we get used to things over time." Think about our families or our neighborhoods or our jobs.  And it’s not because these things turned boring, it’s because they become familiar to us.  This tendency helps us when we’re in pain.  We learn to adapt to the pain or even normalize things, which helps us get through them.  But sadly, it also causes us to lose that amazement for things that are truly special.  Pastor Darryl Dash writes, “It’s one of the greatest spiritual dangers we face. Because it’s possible to see the beauty of Jesus, and be captivated by it, only for that beauty to become routine, and for us to begin to fill that place in our lives, where only Jesus belongs, with lesser things.”  At times, we may even take Christ for granted.

Paul writes in Colossians 1:15-17, "The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together."

Three things standout to me about these verses.  The first is that Jesus is God.  He is not less than the Father.  He is not just a prophet or teacher.  People sometimes ask what is God like, and why doesn’t He just reveal Himself to us?  He has!  You want to know what God is like, look at Jesus.  Hebrews 1:3 says, “The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being.”  There's no difference between the two.  Second, He created all things.  Christ reigns over all creation.  From the smallest plant to the largest star, everything has its beginning and finds its purpose in Him – that includes us and all the nations of the earth.  God’s dominion extends to everything.  This is important because when our view of God is small, our faith is small.  But when we understand who He truly is, our faith grows large.  All things were created by Him and for Him.  Lastly, He holds everything together.  Christ did not create everything and then just leave it to run on autopilot.  He is active in sustaining His creation.  The heavens and the earth, and all forms of life, have their being in Him.  Without Him, everything would disintegrate!  So He holds it all together.

In these verses I think we get a glimpse of Jesus' dominion and His care for creation.  He loves His creation and though things in our world can look out of control at times, we can trust that all things are under His sovereign hand.  And He will not let go until He has carried out His plan and purpose for all things.  What an amazing God!  May we place our faith in Him everyday and never take Him for granted.
