Reaching Kids
Dear West Covina Christian Church,
As a staff, we were reflecting on the joys that we felt with the Vacation Bible School last week. It was so wonderful to share God’s Word with the kids of our church and to be able to minister to the kids at the Naomi House in Arizona at the same time. Isn’t this what we as a church are all about—spreading a passion for God wherever there is an open door? Praise the Lord!
In this Sunday’s worship service, we will continue to think about how we can share God’s love with kids. This time we will be thinking about the kids in the community around the church. As we do, I will be interviewing Michael Flowers. Mr. Flowers is one of our school board members for the West Covina School District. As I have talked with him, our school district’s superintendent, Dr. Charles Hinman, and Cameron Elementary’s Principal, Ms. Sylvia Fullerton, I am beginning to recognize the massive needs in our community, especially for helping kids and families with their educational needs. Cameron Elementary School is a fantastic school but about one-half of the school are at or below the standard knowledge for their grade level in fundamental areas like reading and math. As Dr. Hinman indicated, a 4th grade reading ability is like a “magic number.” If people are not able to learn to read at a 4th grade level, then the chances of them having success in the workforce plummet and the chances of incarceration skyrocket. May we be praying diligently for the families of our community as they prepare to start the new school year with distance learning.
We’re praying for you as well. Please let us know how you are doing so that we can pray better for you.
I hope you have a great week!
God bless,
Pastor Kory
