Quick Look: Pentecost Sunday

I know life just keeps chugging along. It's June. School for our kids is wrapping up. We're planning vacations and thinking of what we're going to do this summer. But for a brief moment, I want us to look back on Sunday, May 28th. Just two Sundays ago, we celebrated Pentecost Sunday. Pentecost comes from the Greek word "pentekoste" which means fiftieth. Approximately fifty days after Easter, we celebrated God’s gift of His Spirit to the believers and the birth of the Church (in Acts 2). We only celebrate Pentecost once a year but the Holy Spirit and the Church are two things we should regularly give thanks for.

Pentecost was a turning point in history. The Holy Spirit was given, the disciples' lives were changed, and the Church was birthed. Now the original Pentecost happened a long time ago. We may think of it as ancient history. But beloved, we are part of that history! And by God's hand, his story is still being written. In the same way the Holy Spirit was at work in Acts, He is at work in you and me. Let him have His way. A quote from Charles Hodge, "By this indwelling of the Holy Spirit, believers are united to Christ, and to one another, so that they form one body. This is the foundation of the communion of saints, making them one in faith, one in love, one in their inward life, and one in their hopes and final destiny."
