Our God is Greater
When we listen to the news and see what is happening all around us, it’s easy to feel discouraged, saddened, and even angry. The brokenness of this world can feel overwhelming, and at times we may find ourselves asking, “Where is God in all of this chaos?”
And as Christians, we may wonder—how can I possibly make a difference in such a difficult and evil environment?
In the middle of those thoughts, God gently reminded me of this truth:
1 John 4:4 (NIV)
“You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.”
When we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, the Holy Spirit comes to live within us. The very same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead now dwells in us. That means we are not powerless—we are filled with God’s power.
The enemy wants us to forget that. He wants us to live in fear, believing that he has authority and control. But that is one of his greatest lies. He does not want us to realize who we truly are—children of God, co-heirs with Christ, and empowered by the Holy Spirit.
Meanwhile, the world constantly tells us that we must achieve, perform, and measure up to certain standards to be accepted. It promotes self-reliance and pride, yet leaves us feeling inadequate when we fall short.
But God offers us something entirely different—identity, security, and strength in Him. This doesn’t mean we won’t face difficulties. Jesus Himself told us:
John 16:33 (NIV)
“In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
So what do we do in the midst of it all?
We shift our focus.
When we fix our eyes on God instead of the chaos around us, everything begins to change. The worries of this world lose their grip as we remember who is truly in control. As in one of my favorite hymns it beautifully says:
“Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
Look full in His wonderful face,
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim,
In the light of His glory and grace.”
This past Sunday, Pastor Kory reminded us of how we can walk in God’s strength through these simple but powerful truths:
Trust in God
Walk in humility—don’t think too highly of ourselves
Be patient—don’t run ahead of God’s plan
Show compassion—be kind to one another
Live God-centered—keeping Him at the center of everything
When we live this way, we begin to reflect His strength, His love, and His power to a world that desperately needs Him.
Because the truth is this:
Our God is greater.
And He has called us to live in that truth.
May God bless you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ!
