He Knows My Name
How are you with names? There are some people who are great with names, but if you are like me you may struggle to remember someone’s name after meeting them (once, twice, or more times!).
Knowing a person’s name can be a way of communicating that you care about him or her. You are letting that person know they are important to you. If someone remembers my name, I must matter to him or her and be valuable in their eyes.
All of us have this desire to be known—by others and especially by God. A song by Tommy Walker, “He Knows My Name,” reminds us that God knows our every thought, sees each tear that falls, and hears us when we call. We read in the Gospel of John, “The sheep hear his voice; and he calls his own sheep by name… I am the good shepherd; and I know My sheep” (John 10:3, 14).
Isn’t it a wonderful thought to know that the One who made heaven and earth knows you by name? God loves you immensely (John 3:16) and he thinks about you all the time (Psalm 139:17-18).
Knowing the value of learning a person’s name, we want to encourage this at church. To help us along these lines, we’re going to pass out name tags this Sunday. It’s a small act, but if we all remember to wear our name tags each week, we’ll eventually get to know each other better. We’ll be able to greet each other by name, have better conservations, and even pray for our brothers and sisters more specifically throughout the week. As a family church, we want to go out of our way to love and care for one another as best as we can.
You might want to get to church early this week so that you can find your name tag. Then, you might keep it in your car, purse, or Bible so that you remember to bring it every week, and together we’ll grow closer to one another.
God bless you and see you on Sunday, Pastor Kory
