Guarding Our Hearts

Proverbs 4:23 (NIV)

“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”

Our hearts are the source of our words, our choices, and the direction of our lives.

But that led me to ask: What influences our heart? How do we actually guard it? Do our thoughts influence our heart… or does our heart influence our mind?

Which comes first?  I found myself really wrestling with these questions.

As I searched and reflected, I came across this simple but helpful truth:

The Bible presents the heart and mind as deeply connected, constantly influencing each other.

Scripture shows us that the heart is the inner source of who we are—our desires, beliefs, and spiritual condition:

“Guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” (Proverbs 4:23)
“For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.” (Luke 6:45)
“The heart is deceitful above all things…” (Jeremiah 17:9)

At the same time, Scripture also teaches that our mind plays a powerful role in shaping our heart:

“Be transformed by the renewing of your mind…” (Romans 12:2)
“Whatever is true… think about such things.” (Philippians 4:8)
“…take captive every thought…” (2 Corinthians 10:5)

These verses remind us that what we consistently think about begins to settle into our hearts and form our character.

So which comes first—the heart or the mind?

It seems that the heart is the source, setting the direction of our lives, while the mind helps shape, reinforce, and sometimes redirect it. They work together in a continuous cycle—each influencing the other.

A simple way to understand it is this:

The heart is like the soil, and our thoughts are like seeds. If the soil is unhealthy, it will affect what grows. But the seeds we plant also determine what takes root. That’s why Scripture calls us to do both:

Guard our hearts (Proverbs 4:23)
Renew our minds (Romans 12:2)

What we think affects how we feel, and what we feel can shape how we think.

True transformation happens when both our heart and our mind are surrendered to God. And when we do that, He promises something powerful:

Philippians 4:7 (NIV)

“And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

When we surrender both our hearts and our minds to Him, He brings them into alignment and that gives us His peace. No longer are we led by our own desires or thoughts, but by His truth and His will.  And from that place, what flows out of our hearts—our words, our actions, and even our thoughts—begins to reflect Jesus and bring Him glory.

Blessing in Our Lord Jesus Christ!
