Don’t Forget the Little Things
It seems like there are so many big things going on in the world today. Doesn't it? The Coronavirus pandemic which is now over two years old. Russia's attack on Ukraine which has been going on for four weeks. Inflation is the highest it's been in 40 years. Gas prices are at all time highs in the U.S. Although you think our gas prices are high? The price of gas in many countries is over $8 a gallon USD with Hong Kong being over $10. None of this was even a thought just a few years ago or for some of these things, just a few weeks ago. I miss the quiet, uneventful times we used to have before the pandemic and all these global events began.
Big things in life often command our focus but it's the little things that we must pay attention to. It is easy to get caught up in the headlines or the big things we think we need to do. Mother Teresa once said, “Be faithful in small things because it is in them that your strength lies.“ Obviously she accomplished great things in her life and in her ministry of compassion but it was her faithfulness and discipline in the simple things that gave her strength. When I think of the little things, I think of my daily need to pray and look to the Lord to give thanks and depend on him. I think of the need to read my bible and ask myself if I'm doing what it says. Do I truly believe this is God's Word? I think of whether or not I'm being faithful with the things God has given me to steward or shepherd: my family, my job, my time, my relationships, etc.
When we lay it all out, we can see how important these things actually are. They're only small or little in the sense that they're everyday things that others may not ask you about or may not seem to immediately impact you. But they eventually will. They're like building blocks in our lives and character that determine what God can do in and through you. Like Mother Teresa said, these small things are where your strength lies. In a parable Jesus told his disciples, he said in Luke 16:10 "Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much." So try not to be taken by all the headlines in the world today. Try not to be shaken by the crises in your life. But ask God daily to make you faithful in the small things he wants you to do and trustworthy in the little things he gives you to steward. And go from there…
God bless,
