A Time to Reflect: Understanding Lent
According to several sites on Google, Lent is a season of 40 days (not counting Sundays) leading up to Easter. It is a time of reflection, repentance, and renewal as we prepare our hearts to remember Jesus Christ’s sacrifice and celebrate His resurrection.
The number 40 is significant in Scripture—Jesus fasted in the wilderness for 40 days, Moses spent 40 days on Mount Sinai, and the Israelites wandered for 40 years. It is a time of testing, transformation, and drawing closer to God.
During Lent, many Christians choose to fast, give up something meaningful, or take on a new spiritual discipline, like increased prayer or acts of service. These things are not just about depriving ourselves but about making room for God to work in our hearts. As we let go of distractions, we can allow God to renew our minds and shape us more into the image of Christ.
Lent reminds us of our need for a Savior. It's a time to examine our hearts, turn away from sin, and embrace the grace and mercy God offers through Jesus. Whether we fast, pray, or give, the heart and purpose of Lent is to draw closer to God.
Three spiritual disciplines we can do during lent:
Fasting - Involves giving up something that distracts us from God (such as food, binge watching our favorite TV shows, Social Media, sports, etc.) and make space for God.
Prayer - Spend time talking with God by setting aside a dedicated time
“Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” James 4:8a
Giving - Being generous with our time, money and resources to serve others. Isaiah 58:6-8
It is an expression of outward love, it is being more intentional to those around us.
How can you get started?
Ask God what he wants to do in your heart or ask Him what He might be calling you to surrender this Lent
Decide on what that Lent commitment is
Keep your eyes on Jesus, draw nearer to Him
Prayer:
Lord God, help us to use this time of Lent to seek You more deeply. Show us the areas of our life that need Your transforming touch. May our hearts be fully turned to You as we prepare to celebrate the hope of Easter. In Jesus Name, Amen.
Praying for God's Blessings during this Lent Season,
