A Psalm 23 Vacation
Psalm 23 is probably one of the most well-known passages in the bible. It says:
"The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever."
Many people who don't even read the bible or know the Lord love this psalm because of how poetic and pastoral it sounds. The imagery of green pastures, quiet waters, and valleys conjure up scenes of nature and beauty, different than here in Southern California. Last week my family and I took a road trip to Oregon. We had a wonderful time driving up the 5 freeway through Northern California and on up to Portland. On the trip, we encountered many pastures, forest areas, and streams that brought us refreshment as the scripture says.
As calm and picturesque as Psalm 23 sounds, there's a deeper meaning here than just peace and tranquility, and beauty and nature. The psalm is more about the relationship between the Lord and His people. David, who wrote the psalm, was described as "a man after God's own heart." One who sought to be close to God. This then describes the relationship that we believers share with the Lord. He is our shepherd and we are His sheep. As a shepherd, He knows us by name and we know Him. As part of His flock, He refreshes us, guides us, and protects us. You see it's the relationship between sheep and shepherd that ultimately gives rise to the peace and rest discussed in this passage. Psalm 23 is a vivid description of God's love and care for His people.
On the way back from Oregon on the last day of our trip, we took a detour and went to see Audrey and Shiori Sakamoto in their new home in Oakland. It was a great time to catch up and renew our acquaintance with these good friends. All in all, we had a great trip and we thank the Lord for His refreshment, guidance, and protection. He is truly a good shepherd!
