Pastor Kory's Update

Dear West Covina Christian Church,

Shelsea and I have been watching the show “Downton Abbey” whenever we have a free evening here and there.  To be honest, I can’t believe how I have got caught up in the story of these English aristocrats from the 1920’s and their servants.  It has been so much fun to watch!

The time period that this show represents shows how each person’s life is defined by what class they are in.  When we think of this in spiritual terms, is it not the most wonderful truth that we are citizens of God’s Kingdom?  We have all the benefits and pleasures of being His child!  The Gospel message is simply that we are adopted into His family and no longer have to live for any other kingdom—we have been redeemed and the kingdoms of money, entertainment, success, etc. pale in comparison to the wonderful life of living in the Kingdom of God.

I was in a baseball meeting for Dawson a little while ago. As we were sitting there in the meeting, one dad spoke up asking questions that revealed that little league baseball was basically the focus of his life.  I’m not trying to be critical because if I didn’t know Jesus I could easily get caught up in the passions, but I couldn’t help but be so thankful that I live for something so much more joyful and meaningful than these trivial things.  I live for God’s glory and the advancement of His Kingdom.

This Gospel message is the message that we must stay grounded in during these times.  With the difficulties and fears around coronavirus and social injustice, keep in mind that we are citizens of God’s Kingdom.  As Paul said in Philippians 3:20-21, “But we are citizens of heaven, where the Lord Jesus Christ lives.  And we are eagerly waiting for him to return as our Savior.  He will take our weak mortal bodies and change them into glorious bodies like his own, using the same power with which he will bring everything under his control.”
