Pastor Kory's Update to the Church

Dear West Covina Christian Church,

On January 12, we had a Mid-Year Congregational Information Meeting. It was very encouraging to hear what is going on in so many of our ministries. Our children’s, youth, and CYA ministries are in good hands with Nao, Shugo, and Stephen. Thank you to Bob and the Board of Directors for putting on this meeting.

Pastor Darren and I also shared at the Congregational Meeting about what we sense the Lord calling us to for this upcoming year. As pastors, we can already sense that 2019 is going to be a great year. The “Big Rocks” that we will focus on this upcoming year are Fervent Prayer, Closing the Back Door, and Engaging the Community. First of all, we must continue to grow to become a church of fervent prayer. This includes our Concerts of Prayer on the first Wednesday of every month and being intentional about how we pray together in our worship services.

Closing the Back Door is a way of emphasizing that we want to get people involved in the life of the church, both those who are currently here and those that come to the church new.  We see this having two areas of focus. One is that we want everyone to serve—and not just for serving sake, but to serve with out of a sense of God’s call. We have organized the church around the Fivefold Ministry pattern that we see in Ephesians 4:11-12 (“So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up”). With this structure in mind, we will have deacons to oversee 13 areas of ministry so that we are equipping all people of WCCC to serve and grow in their faith.

The second way to close the back door is with discipleship. A WCCC discipleship curriculum is currently being written so that everyone (long-time church members and new seekers in the faith) can be challenged and equipped to grow deeper in their relationship with God and to explore God’s unique calling for them. Also, in the area of discipleship, we will want to make a very strong effort to strength and grow our Growth Groups this upcoming year.

The last Big Rock that Darren and I see for 2019 is to engage the community. This means that we sense God leading us to be better at community service, outreach, and evangelism.

All that is exciting and it leads to meaningful activities in the church. Here are some upcoming events for the church:

  • Concert of Prayer on February 6 and then on March 6 at 7:00 in the sanctuary.

  • Orange Family Time on January 27 and February 24 at 12:00 in Room 5.

  • Valentine’s Luncheon on February  9 from 12:00-2:00 in the social hall.

  • Baptism/New Membership class starting on February 17 at 9:20 in Room 2.

  • Women’s Retreat on March 8-10 in Oceanside.

  • Men’s Dinner on March 16 at 5:00 in the social hall.

May God bless all that we do so that we might fulfill our mission statement to spread a passion for Him so that He is above all else in our lives, church, and community.

Together for the Lord,

Pastor Kory
